Health conditions Dachshunds can be prone to

 Progressive retinal atrophy.  None of our dogs have PRA in their familial history.  We do guarantee against PRA up until four years of age.  It is typically seen by the second year of age. 

 Intervertrebral Disc Disease is a condition that is typically not a congenital disorder.  We can not guarantee against IVDD.  Dachshunds are prone to this if they sustain a back injury from jumping up on or off furniture, obesity, or due to advanced age.  A healthy weight and diet is imperative with this breed.  We strongly recommend getting a ramp from Doggo Ramps.  All of our dogs and puppies are trained to go up and down ramps to prevent jumping on and off furniture.  It has been a real blessing for our 15 year old Sophie. 

 Degenerative Myelopathy  is the dog equivalent of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s  disease, DM is a progressive degenerative disorder of the spinal cord.  Because the nerves that control the hind limbs are the first to  degenerate, the most common clinical signs are back muscle wasting and  gait abnormalities.  All of our dogs are tested for this and we guarantee against DM  SOD1A for the life of the dog.
